Sanquhar Tolbooth Museum


The one thing that sticks out the most in the town and not just because of its location in the town. As you pass through the town you will certainly come face to face with this historic building on the road .
The Tolbooth was designed by William Adams and built between 1731-1735. Records suggest that stone s from the castle was used in the construction . It replaced the original Tolbooth which was the resembling jail but was in a ruinous state and thatched with heather.
The present building was converted in to the Sanquhar Burgh Museum in 1987-88.
The Museums is house to many items and includes the Sanquhar knitting tradition and the story of the local mines and the miners, local archaeology and social history as well as items belonging to the world wars and the story of the towns common riding history .
