Robert Burns
Burns had to pass through Sanquhar when riding between the Isle and Mauchline. He stayed at 'the only tolerable inn in the place', which was kept by Bailie Edward Wig ham. It was here that the arrival' of Mrs Oswald of Auchencruive's funeral cortege forced the poet to ride twelve miles further on to New Cumnock. See Oswald, Mrs Lucy.
While he stayed at the Whigham's Inn Robert Burns inscribed one of his poems on the window pane
Envy, if thy jaundiced eye
Through this window chance to spy,
To thy sorrow thou shalt find,
All that's generous, all that's kind.
Friendship, virtue, every grace,
Dwelling in this happy place.
